Teview of the Sennheiser MD 441 - U

The Sennheiser MD 441 - U is exactly what I had hoped it would be. It sounds delicious with absolutely no coloration. No boom or shrillness. What you see is what you get.

It has a beautiful sophisticated sound.

Good in small rooms

I bought this on the recommendation of an audio engineer friend. Once agin, he steered me in the right direction. He told me he likes to do blind comparisons with his friends. He uses more expensive condenser mic and the 441. Guess which one wins every time? I was surprised to close mic a violin in my small studio and listen to how well this mic captured it. It might work better in close quarters than a good condenser. Grated my space is acoustically treated very well, but this mic has been a nice surprise, and very versatile. I am very happy with it, as well as the helpful people at Sweetwater.

All around, excellent mic!!

Loved using this on snare drum, back in my studio days.

Staple.

I've owned mine for 30 plus years. It's the only mic I will put in front of my vintage Fender DR and VR. With ZERO Eq (and the mic in the 'flat' setting) I capture exactly what is coming out of the amp. It's actually scary good. Works good on vocal and incredible on Sax. Very good on percussion, and acoustic guitar. A must have for a studio.

Great microphone, odd control settings

I bought this to use for voiceover when ambient noise was an issue. I also wanted an end-address mic to allow me to see a teleprompter on the computer screen. I tried to decipher the odd settings on the mic, and tried to set it up for voice. It is a twist dial that changes the frequencies filter. I hated the way i sounded, thin and shrill. Disappointed, I put it away for several months. This weekend, I set it up with a different preamp (lifter), made by Royer. I also used the "M" setting (which I assume was for "Music". What a difference. It is a warm microphone with little self noise, full and rich. Very pleasant (even a bit too warm) for voiceover if you are close to it. Two caveats: it is prone to plosives if you aim it straight at the mouth, and it is hypercardioid with very a very, very narrow tolerance. This, of course, places it straight in the path of plosives. I don't like foam windscreens, and it is very awkward to use a disk-style pop filter. My recommendation: situate it high and point down at the mouth, or situate it low and point it up at the mouth.

From their studio-standard MD 421 II drum mic to their trusty headphones and ultra-reliable wireless systems, there are countless good reasons why the artists and engineers here at Sweetwater are quick to recommend Sennheiser products.
