Roland’s Flagship Kit of the V-Drums Fleet

The spacious sprawl and 1:1 pad translation of your favorite stage kit are available in the new flagship kit of the V-Drums fleet: the Roland TD-50KV2 Set. From its full-sized digital snare, ride, and hi-hat pads to its trailblazing TD-50X sound module, this kit is all about giving you authority and expression in a whisper-quiet performance package. Playing out? From the stadium to the sanctuary, the TD-50KV2 Set’s tour-grade stand and discrete analog outputs give you the edge for any live drumming environment. And when it comes to cutting tracks in the studio, the TD-50KV2 excels. With up to 32 channels of audio over USB, professional multitrack drum recording is as simple as running a single cable into your laptop. In addition to its advanced digital pads, the TD-50KV2 comes dressed out in a modern 2-up/2-down tom configuration, with an 18-inch birch-shelled kick drum that really lets you feel the air move beneath your feet and a matching pair of 16-inch crashes so you can land accents on either side of the kit. What really makes gigging out with the TD-50KV2 a treat is the included 3-sided MDS-Stage 2 rack stand. A wide, stable footprint and comfortable spread make kit customization a breeze, while internal channeling allows you to route cables inside the rack for a streamlined look and speedy assembly.

Digital Snare, Ride, and Hi-hat Pads

PD-140DS: 8-sensor digital snare plays like the real thing

The heart of any modern drum kit, acoustic or electronic, is the snare drum. So it’s only fitting that a kit as advanced as the TD-50KV2 Set includes a snare that’s equally sophisticated: the 14-inch Roland PD-140DS. Eight sensors across the head and rim accurately translate your performance to your V-Drums module. This means fat backbeats, cutting rimshots, delicate ghost notes and brush sweeps, and natural cross-sticks that connect every time. And thanks to its full 14-inch diameter, the Roland PD-140DS transitions seamlessly between your acoustic kit and back. Particular about your tuning? So are players at Sweetwater. Fortunately, the PD-140DS’s 8-lug design and 3-ply mesh head make it easy to dial in whatever level of tightness or sponginess you desire.

CY-18DR: Roland’s most convincing V-Cymbal yet

The Roland CY-18DR invites players to bring their acoustic touch back to the eKit. This 18-inch V-Cymbal sways and plays just like a real cymbal. Multiple sensors across the playing surface eliminate the feeling of zones, as distinct edge, bow, and bell tones melt into one another seamlessly. And the Roland CY-18DR’s multi-touch technology not only lets you choke crash attacks with your hand, but also soften cymbal attacks with a finger’s touch. If you’ve had trouble getting the full emotion of a performance to translate through the use of traditional eCymbals, you’re in for a sweet surprise with the TD-50KV2 Set’s included CY-18DR V-Cymbal digital ride cymbal.

VH-14D: the digital hi-hat you’ve been waiting for

The VH-14D V-Hi-hat represents the latest in Roland’s illustrious line of V-Drums digital drum and cymbal triggers. With independent bow/edge sensors and advanced play support, this digital hi-hat trigger gives you the tools you need to create dimension and atmosphere in your tracks just like a “real” set of hi-hats. Mount the VH-14D to your favorite hi-hat stand using the included accessories, and you’re fully supported for pumping time, splashing accents, and creating dizzying variations of closed eighths, half-open flourishes, and bombastic full-bore metal washes. Whatever your style, the VH-14D’s speed and expression are second to none. Even super-quick EDM hat rolls don’t get lost when you're grooving on the VH-14D’s soft, quiet 14-inch rubber playing surface. What really impresses us at Sweetwater is the VH-14D’s intuitive approach to sound creation. Footing, sticking, and even choking on these hats feels much like the real thing. What’s more, the VH-14D’s sleek, low-profile design looks natural in both hybrid and fully electronic environments. So whether you’re incorporating the TD-50KV2 Set into your stage or studio setup, its VH-14D V-Hi-hat provides the look, feel, and performance you’ve been waiting for.

Powered by the TD-50X Sound Module

The next generation of Roland’s flagship V-Drums module

If 2016’s TD-50 drum module represented a sea change in V-Drums modeling technology, the TD-50KV2 Set’s TD-50X module takes V-Drums tone and expression to another level entirely. Inside, you’ll find 70 premium preset drum kits and 900 instrument sounds that run the gamut from rock, pop, and metal to EDM, world, and experimental styles. Support for all three of Roland’s latest digital pads — snare, ride, and hi-hat — makes playing on the TD-50X the most lifelike V-Drums experience to date. Thanks to an intuitive interface with hands-on mix faders, per-function knobs and switches, and endless opportunities to drill down and fine-tune your sound with muffling, tuning, and more, the Roland TD-50X has all the makings of a sound module that can last a career. It’s powered by the latest wave of Roland’s Prismatic Sound Modeling technology. This non-sample-based sound engine allows you to tailor the size, composition, space, and tone of each drum and cymbal to a staggering degree. Other features eDrummers at Sweetwater love about the TD-50X include discreet ins and outs for pads and sends, 500 user samples for bringing your studio sounds to the stage, 24 minutes of onboard mono record time (12 minutes stereo) for capturing ideas in practice and on the road, and up to 32-channel USB audio recording for creating professional drum tracks via a single cable.

Dream up any kit via Prismatic Sound Modeling

Roland V-Drums are the undisputed kings of virtual drum design. And with the TD-50X’s Prismatic Sound Modeling engine, you can expect nuance and realism like never before. Every onboard kit in the TD-50X is crafted to sound great without any tweaking. But for those times when you need a custom kit for a particular performance, Prismatic Sound Modeling has you covered. You have control over each drum shell’s thickness and overtones, plus each cymbal’s size and thickness. You can even control virtual mic placement to dial in the right amount of natural ambience. Once you’ve found your sound, you can sweeten the kick, snare, or toms with 30 types of built-in FX, including smooth multiband compression and saturation.

Create lifelike soundstages using PureAcoustic Ambience technology

A set of drums is only as inspiring as the room it’s played in. The same goes for electronics. Fortunately, the TD-50X’s PureAcoustic Ambience technology creates a natural and immersive soundstage that really makes you feel like you’re there. PureAcoustic lets you dive deep into sound tweaking, too — adjust virtual microphone positions like a real recording studio, then balance each part of the kit with outboard-style FX processors.

Import custom libraries at will

Whether you’re importing one-shots of your studio acoustic kit or loading in your favorite sample library, Roland makes it easy to incorporate these sounds into your V-Drum TD-50X. High-capacity SDHC cards let you create an arsenal of custom libraries and call them up on your V-Drums at will.

Scrap or store kit changes with Snapshot

Tone tweakers abound here at Sweetwater. What we love about the Roland V-Drums TD-50X sound module is that you can edit kits to your heart’s content without committing. Use the Snapshot feature to quickly A/B the before and after results. And if you like what you’ve done, save it; if not, scrap it and start over.

Practice and perform like never before

With its sophisticated brushed black finish to its expressive kit sounds, the TD-50X is built for the stage. But you may be surprised to learn what a difference the TD-50X can make on your practice hours. Jam along to the TD-50X’s built-in metronome to practice septuplets and strengthen your internal click. Or loop a groove and solo over it to build your lick vocabulary. What’s especially cool is you can record yourself playing to a click or backing track right onto an SDHC card. This is a handy way to track ideas and share with bandmates.

Take control of the way you I/O

The versatility of the TD-50X is fully seen in its flexible in and outs. Send drum kits pre-mixed to your FOH engineer using balanced stereo XLR outs, or directly into your home stereo speaker system with unbalanced stereo 1/4-inch outs. And if you’ve got mixer channels to spare, send your kick, snare, toms, and cymbals separately via balanced 1/4-inch direct outs for individual treatment and level control. MIDI in/out even lets you track your performance and replace sounds at a later time.

Record up to 32 channels of multitrack audio over USB

Sweetwater drummers love our eDrums for home recording. And with the Roland V-Drum TD-50X module, you can do it all over USB, in glorious 96kHz, without reaching for an audio interface. This means you can enjoy studiophile drum recording, even in your apartment, at any time of day.

Large Pads and a Spacious Stand

KD-180: the 18-inch V-Kick with a real birch shell

With its 18-inch birch shell and air-damper mechanics, the TD-50KV2 Set’s KD-180 bass drum truly makes it feel like you’re playing an acoustic kick drum. Of course, it also looks the part. Advanced triggering within the shell helps transmit every stroke and double with minimal risk of false triggering or machine-gunning. Meanwhile, adjustable/retractable rugged spurs reduce movement on carpet, wood, or concrete.

Full-sized toms with multi-ply mesh heads

An ensemble cast of Roland’s full-depth PD-108 and PD-128 toms, outfitted with tunable multi-ply mesh heads in a modern 2-up/2-down configuration, makes playing on the TD-50KV2 every bit as satisfying as shredding on your favorite studio kit.

MDS-Stage 2 chrome rack stand

Roland’s MDS-Stage 2 stand gives the TD-50KV2 more than just a spacious spread. This chrome-finished rack is built with tour-grade stability in mind. Its high-grip rubber feet keep you rooted as you play, and its hatched metal clamps keep the supplied cymbal and pad arms from slipping amid an onslaught of frenetic stage energy. Crave a clean setup and speedy assembly? The MDS-Stage 2 features internal channels to route cables from your pads to your module without wire tangles.

The final piece of the puzzle for my studio.

Just an amazing drum kit in every way. My studio is in a loft in my condo so noise is a huge factor. Not only are the drum kits great but they are very quiet to the outside world. Took about a day to get it all set up but was mostly a breeze. Just now getting it just the way I like it.
Music background: In the business since 1972. Now just enjoying retirement with a musicians cave.

So nice

The timing was right. So glad this came out when it did. I have been through several "drum machines" and Frankenstein kits using multiple brains, including a MegaDrum with Roland brains simultaneously. My frustration level was very high trying to dial it in, but ended, for the most part, when I plugged this in. I don't want to think or dwell on the countless hours. I spent tweaking before I got this kit.

I do wish it had a few more kits, etc., but I couldn't be happier because most of the kits suffice and I mainly wanted really good high hat action. It's come a long way since back in the day.

I primarily use this kit, or at least the high hat from the TD with different kits through Ableton. It's been a blast.

Because I have three cats I needed a way to protect the drumheads. I can't be the only one that's used drum heads to cover their drums, but it is so much nicer than using a sheet, which is standard for the most part and still lets the dust in.
Music background: The Nixon Years for a decade (miss you guys!). Ham Radio Ensemble (sound cloud). Starting a new electronic project.

fantastic quality and exceptional sound

I recently ordered, received and setup the TD-50KV2 from Sweetwater. The shipment arrived in a few days. The items are securely boxed and came undamaged. My biggest challenge was setting up the drum stand. The precise location of each part is critical as the stand is prewired, however the parts are not labeled and look similar so after multiple tries I finally got it right. after that, set up was quick and relatively easy. Al the drum parts worked right away after initial power on. I was able to easily connect an iPad and the Roland PM200. everything worked smoothly and the drum kit sounds fantastic.
Music background: I do not currently play with a band I have taken drum lesson for many years and worked up to beginning professional skills

Upgrade from TD30K drum kit. Lots to like, a few nits to pick.

So, I ordered my kit and it took a couple of months to get in stock and arrive, but that's okay. I decided to buy it while the 48-month financing was available.

I will just make a few quick points, and not go into too much of a diatribe about the kit. When I am saying anything that seems like a comparison, I am referring to my TD-30 kit as the comparative measure.

Crash Cymbals: The cymbal pads are much thinner than the ones with my old kit. They vibrate a lot like a real cymbal, and the choking is much better. Sensitivity is excellent.

Ride Cymbal: It has an excellent feel, and it's BIG. The USB connection is nice, and provides for some really sensitive stick feedback. Good stuff.

Hi-Hat: These are WAY better than the VH13 hi-hats. No electronic hat is perfect, but this is close. Excellent feel, closed-to-open transitions no longer have that jarring hump that you're used to, and they are also thinner than the old hi hat triggers, which makes them feel much more real than the old models.

Toms: Excellent. Just excellent. Solid feel, they are a joy to play.

Snare: What can I say, except that it's amazing. The feel is incredible, and it's built like a tank. Also USB connected, this snare provides sensitivity and realism that is unmatched by any other drum I've played so far.

Kick: The kick drum looks cool. It hasn't arrived yet due to a shipping snafu, but I am pretty sure that it's basically a big, cool-looking kick trigger. I can't imagine I'll have a lot to say about it.

Rack: This is a MASSIVE upgrade from the old rack that I am used to. All of the mounts are made of metal instead of plastic. Everything is solid as a rock. Things don't move around like with my old kit. Good stuff for sure.

Brain: The TD50X is a good brain. However, I must say that the kits that came with the TD30 sounded better. The TD50 kits are often a bit too saturated. Also, many of my favorite sounds from the TD30 were not ported over to the TD50X, which was disappointing. However, as I mess around with the brain, I am sure I will be able to recreate many of these sounds. The editing options are endless. But I didn't really want to become a sound engineer to get the kits to sound right. Also, I do wish Roland had invested a bit more in more 80s-centric kits. Also, the choices for ride cymbals and china cymbals and hi hats are EXTREMELY LIMITED. The TD30 had a zillion rides, chinas, etc... The TD50X, not nearly as many. There are what, like 10 ride cymbals? Tsk tsk, Roland. Feels kind of like a setup to have to buy instrument packs through the new Roland Cloud app....

The one complaint: Upon receiving the rack for the kit, I realized that someone at the factory had wired the entire rack backwards. The straight plugs that are supposed to go to the brain were on the right (by 2nd tom post), and some of the angled drum plugs were dangling by the joint at the snare, and the rest of the angled drum plugs were hanging out by the brain. I had to completely disassemble the rack and carefully remove, sort, and reinstall the cable snake, then reassemble all of the joints. I build things out of metal for a living (welding, plumbing, building frames to prints), and this still took me 3 hours. If your cage is wired backwards, and you are not mechanically inclined, do NOT attempt to fix it like I did. Call your Sweetwater rep immediately and get it worked out.

That's about it, I hope you like your new TD50KV2.

;-)

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
