Swing and Subdivision Metronome

Hear the difference between straight eighth notes and swing. Adjust the spacing and play along.

Practice settings

Playback

Each beat always lasts the same amount of time. At 67%, the first eighth takes roughly two-thirds of the beat and the second takes one-third. Actual swing varies with style and tempo. A brighter click marks each beat; a lower click marks the offbeat.

Instructions

  1. Set Tempo (BPM) and Volume.
  2. Choose a preset or adjust First eighth-note share (%).
  3. Select Start playback and compare the beat and offbeat spacing on a pad.

Understanding the result

At 50%, both eighths divide the beat equally. At roughly 67%, the first takes two-thirds and the second one-third, giving a triplet-like long-short feel. The brighter click marks the beat; the lower click marks the offbeat. The quarter-note tempo remains unchanged as the ratio changes.

What to do if the feel seems too exaggerated

Move the share back toward 50% and listen again at your chosen tempo. Real swing varies with style and speed, so use the ratio as an exploration rather than a universal performance rule. Keep the quieter offbeat controlled instead of rushing it.

Summary

Compare different spacing at the same tempo to hear what the swing setting changes.
